Gingerbread clocks are so called because the detail on the case front is made as you'd make a gingerbread man i.e. the (damp) wood is pressed with a mould to give the pattern; that's why they were able to put so much detail into them.
It strikes the number of hours on the hour and once on the half hour on a count-wheel strike. A count-wheel strike is a medieval system that advances the strike by a factor of one every time it strikes. It is NOT self correcting like the British clocks of the day.
